How to write the letter that goes in it

What goes in a cover letter?

Four short paragraphs are enough: the role you are applying for, one piece of work that shows you can do it, why this employer specifically, and a closing line that invites a conversation. Everything else is padding, and a reader who has fifty letters to get through can tell.

How long should it be?

One page, and usually less than that. Around 300 to 400 words fills the space these templates leave without crowding it. If it runs onto a second page, the fix is almost always cutting the paragraph that repeats your resume.

Do you need one at all?

When the posting asks for one, yes — leaving it out is an easy reason to be filtered out. When it does not, a letter is worth writing for jobs you actually want and worth skipping for the rest. It is the only part of an application where you get to explain a career change or a gap in your own words.

Want the resume to match?

Alaz and Dora are named after resume designs with the same identity — the serif heading block and the dark name band carry across both documents. Picking the pair takes one more click.
